Astros on the brink of seventh straight ALCS with Game 3 win vs. Twins

The Houston Astros are one win away from their seventh consecutive trip to the American League Championship Series after defeating the Minnesota Twins 9-1 in Game 3 of the ALDS at Target Field on Tuesday.
Houston led 4-0 before starter Cristian Javier even took the mound, getting a three-run homer from José Abreu in the top of the first inning. Abreu homered again in the ninth, with Alex Bregman (fifth inning) and Yordan Alvarez (ninth) also going long for Houston.
“It was kind of just pass the torch to the next guy,” said Bregman. “Put together a good at-bat and grind it out.”
The Astros bounced back after dropping Game 2 at Minute Maid Park on Sunday and can wrap up the series on Wednesday in Minneapolis. A Twins victory would send the series back to Houston for a winner-take-all Game 5 on Friday.
Houston has reached the ALCS every year since 2017, winning the first of their two World Series that season. The defending champion Astros hope to become the first team since the 1998-2000 Yankees to win consecutive World Series titles.

José Abreu's home runs power Astros
After a disappointing regular season in his first year with Houston, Abreu drilled a three-run homer in the first inning off Twins starter Sonny Gray that put the Astros up 4-0, following Kyle Tucker's RBI single that opened the scoring.
With a 7-1 lead in the ninth inning, Abreu added a two-run homer off Bailey Ober to put the game firmly out of reach, finishing the contest with five RBI.
Abreu, the 2020 AL MVP, signed a three-year, $58.5 million deal with the Astros last winter after spending nine seasons with the Chicago White Sox. The first baseman's .237 average and .680 OPS in the regular season were career-worsts.
“This was one of the reasons why I signed with this organization, to be in the best situation and compete," Abreu said after the game.
Abreu's home runs traveled 442 and 440 feet, making him the first player with multiple 440+ foot homers in a postseason game since StatCast began its tracking in 2015, according to MLB's Sarah Langs.
Cristian Javier continues postseason dominance
Houston's starter pitched five scoreless innings, giving up one hit – albeit with five walks – and adding nine strikeouts in his outing on Tuesday. Javier, 26, put himself into a bases-loaded jam with one out in the fifth, but struck out Max Kepler and Royce Lewis to keep the Twins off the board.
The right-hander has been stellar in the postseason since making his debut in 2020, with a 1.91 ERA in 37⅔ innings. He tossed the first six innings of the Astros' no-hitter in Game 4 of last year's World Series against the Phillies.
“He has a slow heartbeat. He wants the baseball,” Bregman said. “He’s a competitor and we have all the confidence in the world in him every single time he takes the mound.”
Javier had a breakout 2022 campaign (2.54 ERA, 194 K in 148⅔ innings), but saw his ERA jump more than two runs this season and his strikeout rate drop dramatically.
Yordan Álvarez's ALDS rampage continues
Houston's left fielder led off the ninth inning against Ober with a solo home run, his fourth homer of the series. The 26-year-old slugger hit two in the Astros' Game 1 win and another in a Game 2 loss.
Injuries limited Álvarez to 114 games in the regular season, but he still racked up 31 home runs and 97 RBI and was named AL Player of the Month for September.
“He’s the best hitter in baseball,” Astros second baseman Jose Altuve said, “and hopefully he continues to hit like that.”
Alex Bregman making history
The third baseman hit a solo home run off Gray in the top of the fifth to extend Houston's lead to 5-0. It was Bregman's 16th career postseason home run (in 89 games) and with his RBI single in the sixth inning, he moved ahead of Reggie Jackson for ninth all-time with 49 RBI.
“It’s a very confident club, not a cocky club. We don’t showboat too much. We just play,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “The guys have a knack of picking each other up. From day to day, it could be a number of heroes.”
When do the Astros, Twins play again?
Game 4 in the ALDS between Houston and Minnesota is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:07 p.m. ET.
José Urquidy will start Game 4 for the Astros. He beat the Twins in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series in 2020.
Twins RHP Joe Ryan will make his first career postseason start on Wednesday. He has allowed 13 earned runs, nine walks and three homers in 14 innings over three career starts against the Astros.
